The scale of what we endeavour to deliver via major projects and programs, in size and geography and the requirement for emerging and often (at the time of the project start-up) unknown technology make these undertakings essentially complicated. Complexity - a situation in which there is no-longer a definable and predictable link between cause and effect - is as much a challenge for policy makers and project or program owners, as it is for project managers and their delivery teams. Liz Varga's Handbook of Complex Delivery is designed to educate readers on the impact and significance of complexity; to provide the starting point for a new common language and understanding; and offer a wide-ranging collection of proven and rigorous tools for designing, managing and collaborating in a complex environment. The fifty chapters are organised in five sections: People, Information, Performance, Risk and Systems. The chapter contributors are drawn from the leading commentators on complexity, including academics from Australasia, America, Europe and practitioners from aerospace, defence, infrastructure, transformation and other mega-projects.

Liz Varga is Director of the Complex Systems Research Centre, Cranfield University. She has a professional track-record in information technology management consultancy in and between local authorities. Her roles have always been at management level, setting strategic or transformational agendas, and implementing change, projects include: design, development, implementation and support of ICT systems in private sector at ICL/Fujitsu; demutualisation of a private life assurance organization. Her clients are all, directly and indirectly, related to adaptation and critical infrastructure and include: UK Government departments - DfT, DEFRA, BIS; Charities - Institute for Sustainability; Engineering - Arup, Ecotricity, MDST, IBM WPD (Western Power Distribution); National corporations - Network Rail, National Grid; Lobby/coordination groups - ARCC-CN, UKCIP, RSSB.
