Mark Grand (mgrand@mindspring.com) is a Java consultant, speaker, and instructor. He teaches classes on Java, develops Java-based software, and advises companies on how to best use Java-related technology with databases, networks, and electronic commerce. In addition to writing the Java Fundamental Classes Reference, Mark is the author of the Java Language Reference. Prior to his involvement with Java, Mark worked for ten years as a designer and implementor of fourth-generation programming languages. His most recent role in the vein was as the architect of an electronic data interchange product. More information about Mark is available on his web page at http://www.mindspring.com/~mgrand/. Jonathan Knudsen is a staff writer for O'Reilly and Associates, a position that is the antidote to both the crushing boredom and kamikaze hours of his previous jobs. In 1993 he graduated cum laude from Princeton University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He is excited about Java, but keeps wondering what the Next Big Thing will be. Jonathan lives in New Jersey with his wife and technical advisor, Kristen, his daughter, Daphne, and two black and white cats. In his spare time he enjoys playing the piano and bicycling.
