In an increasingly mobile world, millions of developers with Windows programming experience need to quickly transfer their skills to creating compact, asynchronous CE applications. This book presents a roadmap to guide developers through the intricate tasks of porting and reworking Win32 applications to enable them to run efficiently and usefully on Windows CE-based mobile devices. It presents a set of metrics for developers to determine when and how best to proceed in porting Win32 applications. It also shows developers how to understand the embedded-system bias inherent in Windows CE and how to write applications that use this as a strength. It covers Unicode, which is mandatory for Windows CE, and explains how to consider the effect of various screen resolutions.
NANCY NICOLAISEN is a software engineering consultant and trainer, currently specializing in Windows CE. Her firm, n2 software engineering, has recently released Field Trip, a forms based data collection program for handheld devices. Nicolaisen is the author of two previous books, has contributed regularly to Dr. Dobb's Journal, Database Advisor, PC Magazine, and Byte, and is the former Development Tools columnist for Computer Shopper. About Gearhead Press Responding to the ongoing demands of IT professionals for current and reliable information on the latest programming technologies, Wiley Technical Publishing introduces the Gearhead Press titles. These books, written by accomplished trainers in their respective fields, focus on using real world case studies to give readers the best information on leading topics. The Gearhead Press titles are characterized by two imprints: In the Trenches and Point to Point. Both imprints include fast paced books written by fellow IT professionals who have been there and done that. In the Trenches books guide readers to proficiency, and serve as practical, hands on references after the initial tasks are accomplished. The Point to Point titles invite readers to join an IT team at a model company and implement technologies in real world environments demonstrating actual problems and solutions.
