What the heck is Facebook? Twitter? Blogging? This book answers these questions and explains how to use a variety of social networking sites to keep in touch, stay in business, and have fun.

This book covers the main social networking 'spaces,' and introduces some of the ways people are enjoying them within a family or business context. It includes information on posting pictures, using add-ons, and working with Facebook and LinkedIn groups. It also covers the phenomenon of Twitter, including how it has grown and the road ahead.

This book also covers how you can use the various networks together, such as sending a Twitter message that updates your Facebook status, or exporting your LinkedIn contact list and using it to invite people to Facebook. It also includes discussion of how to use social networks for both personal and business use, and how to keep them separate.

  • How to use Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites for family, friends, and business
  • How to make your sites talk to each other
  • How to make the most of social networking and stay out of trouble

Introduction This book is a how-to guide, a tour of social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, LinkedIn, and others. It's appropriate for beginners and anyone else who'd like to get a sense of what you can do on various social networks. I've tried to make the book as friendly as possible and easy to read, and I hope you enjoy it. Most of the book contains step-by-step instructions for specific things you can try. My goal is that by the end of the book, you gain a good understanding of what you can do in today's social networks. There are also some sections written in a blog style, where I share personal examples as an attempt to provide some inspiration. I hope that when you see what I share, maybe you'll think back to kindergarten and how much fun show-and-tell can be. I hope you'll discover how much fun it can be to take pictures, gather stories, and use social networks to share your adventures with friends and family. At some point, I discovered this for myself, and I've also seen this "e;aha!"e; moment with friends and in classes I've taught. I'm convinced that in the end, for many people, this can be one of the most meaningful and satisfying things to do on social networks, so I'm interested in helping people explore this area.
