The Book of Weather Eye is a selection of articles from the late Brendan McWilliams`s Weather Eye column in The Irish Times over two decades. It contains a wide cross-section of the subjects Brendan chose to write about.
These articles, free-spirited in nature, date from 2006 — the last whole year in which Brendan was pain-free and blissfully unaware that he had cancer. This was also the year that he began broadcasting on Today with Pat Kenny, giving readers of his column the chance to reacquaint themselves with his wonderful voice.
Nowhere was Brendan’s voice more articulate than in his Weather Eye column, which had become, for him, a daily opportunity to express his ideas in a creative way. He was passionate about spreading scientific information in an accessible manner. His love of history and literature had furnished him with a remarkable breadth of knowledge. He welcomed the daily challenge of Weather Eye and often remarked on how indebted he was to the many people who wrote to him over the years with questions, ideas and contributions to his research database.
It is for these people, his readers and friends, that this book is compiled.

Brendan McWilliams, BSc. MBA, CMet., FRMet.S, born in Dublin in 1944, was an accomplished meteorologist, scientist and administrator. He presented the RTÉ radio and television weather forecasts during the 1970s, became Deputy Director of Met Éireann in the late 1980s and a Director of the European Meteorological Satellite Organisation, EUMETSAT, in the late 1990s. During his career he frequently represented Ireland at an international level within the field of meteorology and climate change. He is best known in Ireland, however, for his daily Weather Eye column, which ran in The Irish Times from 1988 until his death in 2007. A selection of his 2007 articles will appear in 2009.
