Asham House in Sussex was once home to Virginia and Leonard Woolf and is the inspiration behind the Asham Award. Launched in 1996 to support and encourage new writers, it is Britain's only prize for short stories by women.

Kate Pullinger's books include the novels A Little Stranger, Weird Sister, The Last Time I Saw Jane and Where Does Kissing End? and the short-story collections My Life as a Girl in a Men's Prison and Tiny Lies. She is Reader in Creative Writing and New Media at De Montfort University; she lives in London.
