Tony Harrison was born in Leeds in 1937. His first book, The Loiners, won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize, and in 1992 he won the Whitbread Poetry Prize with The Gaze of the Gorgon. Tony Harrison has also written extensively for film, theatre and opera, including highly acclaimed adaptations of the English Mystery Plays and Aeschylus's Oresteia for the National Theatre. He lives in Newcastle and London.
