Chapter 4
Vezina awoke with a start as a bright flash lit the cavern. Tarbus had thrown a large log into the pit atop the burner embers sending a cloud of shimmering sparks towards the ceiling. There was the sound of beating wings as large bats came down and swirled around him before returning upwards into the gloom.
She couldn’t help feeling frightened as she stared at the figure dressed in black. Tarbus was wearing a black fur trimmed cape over a black tunic with black armor. He took off his black helmet to reveal his long black hair and closely trimmed black beard.
Tarbus stared at Vezina for a moment before saying “you look as if you have seen a ghost, girl. Did you not expect to see me here?”
She was silent for a moment then said “of course I expected to see you, Tarbus. I just didn’t expect you to appear like…”
He waited for a moment for her to continue and when she didn’t, he asked “appear like, what?”
Vezina hesitated for a moment before saying “like something from the underworld.”
Tarbus glanced at the painting on the cave wall near the chair she was sitting on before asking “are you saying I look like Kawabazmos himself?”
She closed her eyes and covered her ears with her hands as she said “please do not speak his name aloud, Tarbus.”
He walked over to the chair and gently pulled her hands away from her ears saying “you have nothing to fear, Vezina. You have been sitting alone in this dark cave and your mind is playing tricks on you. Open your eyes and look at me.”
Vezina opened her eyes and looked at his smiling face before leaning forward to kiss him hard on the mouth. She then shrugged off the wolf skins saying “you shouldn’t scare me like that, Tarbus. You will take years off my life.”
Tarbus helped her stand then gave her a tight hug saying “forgive me, it will not happen again.”
She took his hand and led him over to the table saying “I have brought food for you. Sit, eat, drink and I will tell you news of the village.”
He placed his helmet on the table and unbuckled his sword belt saying “I care nothing about news from the village, but I will listen only because I love hearing the sound of your voice.”
Vezina poured him a cup of wine and asked “don’t you get lonely living in this cave?”
Tarbus set his sword belt on the ground and picked up his wine cup asking “what makes you think I live in this cave?”
She looked around for a moment before saying “besides the village, this is the only other place I’ve seen you. Are you saying you don’t live here?”
He took a sip of wine before sitting down and said “I use this cave for hunting purposes, but the answer is I don’t live here.”
Vezina nodded as she walked over to the rocks near the fire pit to retrieve the loaves of bread saying “I see.”
She came back to the table and set the bread on some plates and asked “so, where do you live?”
When Tarbus didn’t answer, she said “Dardonos left me here to go higher into the mountains. Did he go to where you live to tell you I was here?”
He looked at her and smiled but said nothing.
“You trust Dardonos, but not me?”
“I trust you, girl.”
“then why won’t you tell me where you live?”
He shrugged and said “there is information that is dangerous to possess. There are many people who would see me dead.”
“But not from our village. The place where you grew up.”
Tarbus grinned at her showing his even white teeth as he asked “are you sure there is no one in that village who would see me dead?”
She was silent for a moment before saying “you speak of Rufus.”
He nodded and said “I should have killed him years ago.”
“He saved your life as a child and allowed you to grow up in our village. He is the chief of our clan. You cannot kill your chief, Tarbus.”
He shook his head at her saying “he is not my chief and you do not know he saved my life as a child. My people could have been looking for me when Rufus took me away. And yes, I can kill him. The only reason I don’t is because he is your father and you would hate me if I did.”
She nodded as she broke the bread in pieces and said “then I thank you for not killing him.”
Tarbus bowed his head saying “anything for you.”
Vezina smiled brightly and asked “really? Anything at all?”
He frowned and said “within reason, girl.”
“Oh, not anything then” Vezina said as she placed the cheese on a plate next to the bread then began peeling eggs.
After a few moments of silence, Vezina said “I have something special for you.”
“You have always had something special for me. Is tonight the night that I get it?”
She blushed hard and choked a little as she said “I didn’t mean that special, you rutting animal.”
He chuckled and said “I guess Zalmoxis does not answer all prayers. Fine. What else do you have that is special?”
Vezina opened the top of the earthen jar and showed him the contents saying “butter.”
Tarbus laughed loudly and the sound of it echoed off the cavern walls disturbing the bats overhead.
She looked confused when she asked “why do you find this humorous?”
His blue eyes sparkled with mirth when he said “it is something the traders from the south told me about butter. I have been spending much time with them learning their language and I have found that food is an important part of culture.”
“So, what did they tell you about butter?”
“They think Thracians to be uncivilized and they refer to us as butter eating barbarians.”
She frowned when she said “well, I don’t find that amusing at all. Are you telling me you do not want butter on your bread?”
He shook his head saying “I may not be Thracian, but I am a barbarian who loves butter on my bread. It was very thoughtful of you to bring such a gift for me. Thank you, Vezina.”
Vezina seemed very pleased by his words and said “I think I know the way to a man’s heart.”
Tarbus nodded and said “you do.”
He then stood up saying “and I have something special for you.”
“And what would that be?”
“Stand up and open your cloak.”
Vezina looked at him with wide eyes as she clutched her cloak tightly and shook her head.
He rolled his eyes and looked upward muttering “Zalmoxis, why do you test me in such a way?”
Tarbus then looked at her and said “you know I would never harm you. Stand up and open your cloak.”
She smiled as she stood and opened her cloak.
He looked down at her feet and shook his head saying “it is just as I thought. Your boots are worn out and your leggings appear to be made of rat fur. Take those disgusting things off.”
“The fire is great, but it is still cold in here. Do you want me to freeze to death, Tarbus?”
He shook his head as he walked to the other side of the cavern saying “just do as I say, girl. Why must you always argue with me?”
She sat down and began unlacing her boots and leggings saying “because arguing with you is one of my great joys in life.”
Tarbus nodded as he began going through the things near his weapons as he said “you surely act as though it is.”
He found what he was looking for and came back to the table saying “I had these made especially for you.”
Tarbus set a pair of boots down in front of her which were made of the softest leather and had legging lined with the fur of the silver fox.
Vezina looked down at the boots then back up at him and asked “well, what are you waiting for?”
He chuckled as he knelt down and slipped the boots on her. He then laced up the leggings and slapped around the fuzzy tassels at the top before standing up asking “are you pleased with your new footwear?”
She wiped the tears from her eyes as she looked down and wiggled her feet saying “this is the most thoughtful gift I have ever received. Thank you so much, Tarbus.”
He leaned down and kissed her forehead saying “I think I know the way to a woman’s heart.”
Before he could straighten back up, Vezina grabbed his face with both hands and kissed him for a very long time.
When she finally leaned back, Vezina said “you certainly do know the way to a woman’s heart. Now that you’re there, why not stay awhile?”
Tarbus smiled as he took a seat back at the table saying “I have no plans of leaving tonight.”
She stuck out her tongue and crossed her eyes saying “you know that’s not what I mean.”
He took a knife from the table and began spreading butter on some bread saying “I know exactly what you mean, my love.”
Vezina placed an egg and some pieces of cheese on his plate asking “may I ask a favor?”
Tarbus eyed her suspiciously as he bit into the egg then popped a couple of pieces of cheese into his mouth. He washed it down with some wine then began eating his buttered bread.
She waited patiently for a few moments before asking “what say you, Tarbus? May I ask a favor?”
He nodded and said “you may ask.”
“I know when the...
