Bill and Greg, best friends and EOD Specialists, are protecting soldiers in hazardous areas of Afghanistan when chaos strikes. An IED explodes, killing Greg and leaving Bill with serious health issues. Haunted by Greg's dying wish and a promise between Army friends, Bill returns home. His wife tries to help him deal with his survivor's guilt while battling terminal illness. Not wishing to burden him, she leaves without saying goodbye. Bill begins to project his anger onto their son, Jimmy, who's coming to terms with his sexuality. Jimmy is terrified of being exposed and relies on his belief in miracles for comfort. When he grows tired of his dad's abuse, he often escapes to his secret rock hideaway on Mount Rubidoux. One day, Jimmy helps hide a runaway, Nevaeh. She's running from a Russian sex trafficker who's trafficking her mother. Jimmy agrees to help her but is detained when his dad is taken to the hospital with terminal pancreatic cancer. When Nevaeh goes to rescue her mom alone, she's captured. In desperation, Jimmy takes a chance and asks his dad for help. Wanting to earn his son's respect back, they go to rescue Nevaeh and her mother. Will Bill and Jimmy be able to save another family as they struggle to save their own?
