Ian Griffin served in the United States Army for 31 years. During this time, he lived in Germany for nine years. Living in Germany gave him a unique perspective of Germany and its culture. He has incorporated his experiences and observations into spinning a yarn that encompasses Rick and Katja.
Rick and Katja on a military assignment has been given a unique proposition from a stranger. An invitation into the dark world of espionage and assassinations while still on active duty. Not realizing this proposition would take their tour of duty in Germany deeper and darker than either would expect. Rick and Katja would step into a world that would test their lives, their commitments to each other, and their family. From this chaotic world, a spy couple emerges. With unexpected twists and turns, an old enemy dark cell that was thought to be dead, reemerges. Rick and Katja navigate their emergence into the world of deception and death.
Getting Hired
Katja and Rick sit by the fountain simply embracing the ambiance of southern Germany. People pass by as they listen to the water pour from the fountain. Freshly baked bread is placed into some small containers by the baker, getting ready to be shipped out to convenience stores while the loaves are still fresh and warm. A local Imbiss is heating their tasty delicacy on the vertical rotisserie down the street. An older man is buying a small bouquet of flowers, most likely for his wife. He smells them before leaving the store. A lady strolls the usual cobblestone path that she has taken for years. The small town is vibrant with life but at a comfortable, slow pace.
Katja turns away from the happenings and looks at Rick.
“Let’s go back to where our lives changed forever, you know the place, my love.”
Rick turned toward Katja. “Okay, let’s do it,” he said with a nod.
Katja and Rick stroll towards the small inn that they stayed at on their first night in Kitzingen. The ole Gasthaus is on the west side of the train tracks and has a little restaurant downstairs. The restaurant serves traditional hearty German dishes such as Schnitzel or Bratwurst. This quaint little eatery is where Katja and Rick met Franz for the first time.
That first evening in Kitzingen, Katja and Rick had flown into Europe with their children from Fort Bliss, Texas. They arrived that evening at the Gasthaus where they would stay for about a week until they received adequate quarters. Together they had been married for some time and had come to Kitzingen as a blended family. Rick had three children from a previous marriage, Michael, Jonas, and Emma. At the same time, Katja had Noah. The couple had a son between them named Sebastian. That first evening at the Gasthaus, they had just finished their nice German meal and sent the kids upstairs to one of the two rooms they had reserved to settle down for the evening.
Rick and Katja remain sitting at their table to finish their meal. A man approaches the table wearing traditional Bavarian clothing. He had a nice wool jacket over a red and white checkered buttoned-up shirt. The man had on brown Lederhosen that went right below the knee and wool socks that went above the calf but left about an inch of bare skin between the socks and the Lederhosen. His hair was black and slightly silver, and his stature was around six feet tall.
“Hallo, my name is Franz.” He spoke with a thick Bavarian accent. “May I have a moment of your time?”
Katja looked up at the stranger and kindly replied, “Sure, my name is Katja, and this is my husband, Rick.”
“Yes, this I know. I know who you both are,” Franz replied.
Rick and Katja looked at each other, sincerely puzzled, and almost simultaneously replied, “what?”
“Yes, I have a file on both you and your military service. I can tell you all about you and your children,” Franz stated.
Rick stood up, protectively stepped toward Franz.
“What the hell is going on here?”
Franz put his hand on Rick’s chest reassuringly and said, “there is nothing to be alarmed about, but this conversation would be better someplace quiet. Might I suggest your second room, or we take a stroll down by the river, just us three? I give you my word no one is in danger.” Franz glances upstairs and says, “they are safe too.”
Katja feeling worried, interjected, “let’s go upstairs now. I want to see my kids.”
As they got upstairs one of the doors was open. Katja quickly ran in. She finds a young lady in her late 20s sitting there with the kids.
The oldest of the five Taylor kids, Michael, turned to Katja as she walked up to the group. “Hey Mom, this is Sabine, and she said she is going to be our babysitter.” Michael smiled at his mom sheepishly. Sabine was tall with flowing blonde hair that reached down to the middle of her back. She was beautiful and Michael liked that about her. Katja looked at Rick and Franz in bewilderment.
Franz then interjected. “Well, Michael, that is if, your mom and dad agree. See Katja; they are in good hands, I assure you. Why don’t we have a stroll down by the river?” Katja confusingly nods yes, and Rick is still speechless. Franz turns to Sabine.
“Can you ensure the children are bedded down before 9 p.m. and stay with them until Katja and Rick return?”
“I would be glad to,” Sabine said with a smile.
“Oh, wait.” Franz halts. “Just to put everyone at ease here, I want to give you your own cell phone, Katja and Rick. In there is Sabine’s number. Go ahead, one of you, give her a call.”
Katja flips the phone open and sees a few numbers already programmed into the phone, including one labeled with Rick’s name. She scrolls down to Sabine and gives it a ring. Sabine’s phone buzzes.
Sabine answers, “Ja. Hallo, Katja.”
“I think it is time for me to get Rick and Katja up to speed on everything. Sabine, we will be back within the hour,” Franz informs everyone.
Rick, Katja, and Franz walk out the door and head towards the center of town and the river. As they got down by the river, Franz looked around to ensure no one else was present.
“Ok, Rick and Katja, let me explain what is going on.”
Franz stops by some steps that lead into the Main River. “Let us all sit down.”
The group takes a seat on the river steps.
“As I told you, my name is Franz. I work for the Agency,” Franz explains. “I will not tell you which Agency, but I will tell you it is from America, and the Agency will always do what is good for America.”
Rick and Katja listen intently to the information Franz tells them, trying to decide if they should believe what he is saying or not.
“We have been watching both of you for some time,” Franz continues. “The Agency would like to offer you both a position that would not interfere with your military duties. Rather, it would complement them.”
Rick is shocked by this proposition. Could this Agency be a secret part of the government? How do they not know about this? Would it really not interfere with their duties?
Katja is perplexed by all the information she is hearing. How would this not interfere with the Army?
“As you move throughout your military career, there will be times when we call upon you at your locations, asking you to do other work for the Agency,” Franz tells them. “Such as, while you are in Kitzingen, it could be retrieving a packet, spying on someone, and so forth. With this opportunity comes several things. Our time is limited, so I will spit a few things out. One is you have Sabine as a permanent babysitter, or as some may call them, a nanny. She is part of the Agency as well. Your children will be protected and nurtured in a way like never before. She will have knowledge about all your missions to ensure everyone is on the same sheet of music.”
Franz pauses for a moment to ensure Rick and Katja understand and then proceeds. “You will be paid through an account in Switzerland that is slowly routed to your account, which will not raise any red flags. The IRS will never be an issue, for we have cleared that avenue. However, other people or groups may try to search you and your financials will come up oblivious to them. From the outside, your finances will look like a typical Soldiers account. You will receive pay at such a rate that you and your children will never have to worry about money. Speaking of taking care of everything, your brother, Ben.”
“Wait, what do you know about Ben?” Rick asks.
Franz looks at Rick reassuringly and says, “Rick, I know everything about you, my friend. We will make sure Ben gets the best care there is and that he is in the best facility available. You will only need to be the brother that loves and visits him. No financial burden will be yours.”
Rick and Katja look at each other in a little disbelief. They look back at Franz and he replies, “we can move him within a couple of days to the care facility of your choosing, you just have to say the word. The Agency will take care of all his medical and financial needs that he will ever incur. That won’t be your problem anymore, Rick.”
Rick’s anxiety begins to simmer down some.
Franz continues, “We have already found you a house to live in here in Kitzingen. Inside of it, there are a few things that will be at your disposal. There is 50 thousand euros in cash to be used as needed for call-up missions. There is also a passport in German for each of you and a different American passport. All with different aliases. Finally, several M9 Berettas with silencers are placed in several small gun safes throughout the house.”
“Wait, what?” interjected Katja. “You said guns?”
“Yes, Katja, we know you had guns in the house under lock-in key in America, and we realize you are both quite familiar with the Beretta, so we thought the Beretta would be comfortable for both of you,” Franz assured. “Now, we have a gun safe under each side of the bed; both have a right-handed keypad for the finger code. We have one under the tabletop on the computer desk and one under the couch in the living room. Each safe has the same code to alleviate any confusion.”
“Stop everything,” Rick interjects. “So, you’re going to pay us for exactly what? You want us to be spies?...
