Lord Chesterfield's most famous work is his classic collection of Letters to His Son, advice on the model of female conduct books to his illegitimate son. Samuel Johnson, the writer of the famous Dictionary, begged to differ and thought the advice amounted to 'teach[ing] the morals of a whore, and the manners of a dancing master.' Lord Chesterfields Letters are Stephen Bayley's favourite reading. In this edition he has distilled Chesterfield's most outrageous and poignant advice into a marvelous collection of wit that rivals Oscar Wilde's aphorisms.

Stephen Bayley started his career as an academic at Kent University and became widely known when he publicly resigned as Creative Director from the Dome a year before it became a public relations catastrophy. Bayley created the influential Boilerhouse Project at the Victoria and Albert Museum, founded London's Design Museum, and advised the Labour government. He is a Chevalier d'Honneur in France. Lord Chesterfield wrote almost daily to his illegitimate son, Philip, from 1737 onwards, providing him with candid instruction in etiquette. Praised Reflecting the political craft of a leading statesman and the urbane wit of a man who associated with Pope, Addison, and Swift, they reveal Chesterfield's political cynicism. Not originally intended for publication, the correspondence provides a truthful but savage look at the relationship between the sexes.
