German-born Walter Pfeiffer is one of Ireland's leading names in the world of photography and in this book he presents his perception of a landscape he has grown to appreciate and understand more deeply over the years. Poems from seven leading poets who are equally fascinated by the landscape of the west coast of Ireland are included: Eva Bourke, Moya Cannon, Michael Coady, Eamon Grennan, Joan McBreen, Seosanih 0 Guairim and Mary O'Malley.Connemara archaeologist Michael Gibbons provides a wonderfully informative introduction.Walter's photographs have appeared in numerous books and publications including In the Houses of Ireland (Thames Hudson - Connemara, the widely-recognised but geographically imprecise region in the west of Ireland, has long attracted artists and writers, Walter Pfeiffer's images do not simply reflect the beauty and wildness of the area but they present us with a fresh personalized viewpoint of a landscape he clearly treasures.
Walter Pfeiffer regards himself as one of the lost generation who was born during the second world war in Germany. He grew up in the rural Eifel region, helping out on his grandparents' small subsistence farm. He ascribes his affinity to land and nature to this early experience. In 1964, Walter visited Ireland. He returned the following year and he has since lived and worked in Ireland. Walter has crested two highly regarded landscape photography books: Wicklow: A Personal View (2000) and Connemara & Beyond (2005). He is also responsible for some of Ireland's iconic art, notably the posters on writers, dressers and doorways.
