The tribal pilgrims reverse the sentiments of Manifest Destiny and travel south through the ruins of a white world that ran out of gas.

Gerald Vizenor, a mixedblood member of the Minnesota Chippewa tribe, is a professor of literature and American studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
