A comprehensive overview of Emil Nolde, this book traces the artist's entire career, providing new perspectives on his life and work. Known as a master of color, Emil Nolde used many different types of media besides painting, including watercolor, drawing, and prints, to create works such as his numerous flower paintings and coastal landscapes. The book explores Nolde's expressionist painting technique and reexamines his motives as an artist by looking at how his works were received and how this was shaped by the artist's image of himself. As well as featuring Nolde's lesser studied early and late paintings and previously unpublished works this volume also takes the latest research on Nolde's work and his relationship to National Socialism into account. The book accompanies an extensive retrospective on Nolde's work.

Emil Nolde, 1867-1956, Hauptvertreter des deutschen Expressionismus. Nach einer Ausbildung als Möbelzeichner und Holzschnitzer arbeitete Nolde als Lehrer an der Kunstgewerbeschule in St. Gallen. Von 1906-07 Mitglied der Brücke in Dresden. Im Dritten Reich war Nolde als 'entarteter' Künstler verfemt und wurde 1941 mit einem Malverbot belegt.
