The Likeness explores how gay and lesbian sexuality is affected by social and psychological constraints in a world inextricably bound to heterosexuality as the socially dominant mode. Juanjo Viéitez's quest for the elusive 'likeness' as sexual and emotional identity becomes doomed as he adopts different sexual attitudes in a vain effort to achieve authenticity in his personal relationships. But in another sense, Juanjo Viéitez's struggle to overcome sexual barriers becomes the struggle of Spanish gay and lesbian culture to find a space of its own, free of the gender and sexual antagonisms that often alienate, even destroy, its still fragile and problematic existence.

The Author: Born in Vigo, Spain, María-Xosé Queizán teaches Galician Language and Literature in Vigo's Santa Irene Institute. She has written several novels and a theater play, Antígona or the Force of Blood (1989). She is an essayist and newspaper columnist, particularly on feminist issues, as well as a literary critic in her book, The New Narrative or the Struggle against Sentimentalism. Her first book of poems, Metaphor's Metaphor (1991) has achieved great critical and popular success. The Translator: A native of Vigo, Spain, Ana M. Spitzmesser is Associate Professor of Spanish at Niagara University, New York. Her field of interest also includes Galician literature and culture. Dr. Spitzmesser is a regular contributor to scholarly literary journals in the United States, Spain, and Australia. She has published two books, Alvaro Cunqueiro, la fabulación del franquismo and Narrativa posmoderna española: cronica de un desengaño. She is currently working on her third book, a critical study on the work of Galician writer Carlos Casares.
