Marwan Hassan was born in Kuwait in 1968 to an Egyptian father and a German mother. After spending a few years in Great Britain and Greece, he moved with his family to Egypt, where he immersed himself in the country's rich history and culture. While in Egypt, he worked as a tourist guide on Nile cruises and as a university lecturer until 1997. He then moved to Dubai and Amsterdam before settling in Germany in 1999. In Germany, Marwan Hassan pursued studies in public administration and earned multiple Master's degrees: an MA in Islamic Studies, an MA in Social Sciences with a major in Adult Education, and an MA in Digital Humanities. Currently, he works full-time as a researcher in the public service sector. However, flutes have been a lifelong passion for him; he has been building and playing rim-blown flutes for over 45 years. His family business, Shakuhachi Shop, sells these flutes online at www.shakuhachi-shop.de. His fascination with bamboo flutes began in his childhood. While working as a guide on Nile cruise ships, he would gather guests by playing the flute instead of using a flag or an umbrella. To share his flute culture in Germany, he has published several websites, books, and video tutorials that offer instructions on playing and building various flute models. His German-language books on flute-making have sold thousands of copies. With his decision to write a comprehensive book on building different flutes in English, Marwan Hassan aims to reach aspiring young flute builders worldwide. This practice-oriented book will guide readers in constructing Kawala, Ney, Saluang, and Pueblo flutes, providing a foundation for building any rim-blown flute imaginable.
