"a great book" Ben Chew, Johnny Depp's lawyer at the trial speaking on CourtTV
Johnny Depp: monstrous wife-beater? Innocent victim of Amber Heard’s abuse? Or is the reality more complex?
Depp v Heard: the unreal story is the definitive account of the gruelling court battles between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, by the reporter who was there. Using witness testimony and contemporaneous evidence, Nick Wallis has created a gripping reconstruction of the allegations of violence, drug-taking and wild extravagance which dominated two epic trials and made headlines around the world.
Nick also weaves in his own reportage and insights, bringing the courtroom drama to life and analysing how courts in the UK and USA arrived at conflicting conclusions.
If you want to know who to believe, Depp v Heard: the unreal story is your conclusive guide to what really happened.
"Wallis is scrupulously impartial, pointing out inconsistencies and contradictions without once coming down firmly on either side."
Anne Billson, The Times
"Wallis makes the knockout bout between Depp and Heard a digest of the rancorous, profligate times we are living through."
Peter Conrad, The Observer
"Wallis’s overall approach is admirably even-handed and analytical, even when he concludes a section by offering up his own opinion – which he often does with a welcome touch of humour."
Ellen Lister, The Telegraph
Nick is an award-winning broadcast journalist who was trained up by the BBC. He is known in the UK as one of the leading experts on the Post Office scandal, in which hundreds of innocent people were given criminal convictions on the basis of faulty IT evidence. This became the subject of Nick's first book, The Great Post Office Scandal. Nick got interested in Johnny Depp's legal battles when he was sent to the High Court in London to cover the first day of Depp v NGN in July 2020. He subsequently travelled to the US in April 2022 to report on Depp v Heard from Fairfax County, Virginia. His second book - Depp v Heard: the unreal story - is an objective, unflinching, forensic examination of what happened in Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's relationship, with added insight drawn from Nick's experience of being on the ground reporting both trials. Nick lives in Surrey, England and is married with three children.
