Alan Fearnley was born in Yorkshire and has established himself as one of Britain's foremost artists portraying the transport scene. He has exhibited with the Royal Society of Marine Artists, was elected a full member of the Guild of Aviation Artists in 1975 and became the first chairman of the Guild of Railway Artists in 1979, a post he held for five years. His paintings are in private collections in many different countries and in public collections at the National Railway Museum, the RAF Museum and the Fleet Air Arm Museum.
