The symposium “Scientific Approaches in Sound and Movement Research” took place in Graz from the 20th to 23rd September 2018. The purpose of this meeting was to bring together ethnomusicologists and ethnochoreologists who work in sound and/or movement studies and use methods borrowed from the sciences, or work in inter- or transdisciplinary projects together with scientists from other fields. At the meeting, sixteen full papers were presented, grouped into sessions focusing on Music and Dance as Data, Analyzing Dance, Regional Models: India, Cognition – Body – Timbre, and Rhythm – Meter – Timing.

On 7th November 2018 the group was officially accepted as the “Study Group on Sound, Movement, and the Sciences” within the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM). This volume is therefore both the publication of the first proceedings and a record of the founding meeting.
