Painting with RustGiovanna Sarti (born 1967 in Cervia, Italy, lives in Berlin) studied under Per Kirkeby at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. In 2013, she took part in the exhibition »Painting Forever« at Deutsche Bank Kunsthalle in Berlin. Giovanna Sarti is a nonfigurative painter. For her, painting is first of all an intensive examination of the possibilities of the material; besides pigment, ink, varnishes and coal she uses metal powders, and has recently began working in layers using rust. She initially applies it onto the canvas and then has it fixed before working the canvases at her studio using acrylic paints, ink and/or varnish. Occasionally the various paint mediums react chemically with one another. Such processes cannot entirely be controlled, and the artist is deliber­ately using the inherent dynamics of the ­material, because she places great importance to pre­cisely this processual way of working. Thus, the layered structure of her work is to be seen less in reference to external conditions but, rather, as an ­analogy to existential psychological processes, since the paint layers are ­superimposed, like memories. »The daily slow layering of images, thoughts and feelings allows me to ex­perience my work as real, and not as an abstraction«, says Giovanna Sarti. And as nature, ­memory, and life, ­Giovanna Sarti’s work combines beauty with roughness. En 2013, elle a participé à l’exposition « Painting Forever » à la Kunsthalle de la Deutsche Bank à Berlin. Giovanna Sarti est une peintre non figurative. La peinture est pour elle d’abord une exploration intense des possibilités qu’offre le matériau, elle se sert de pigments, d’encre, de vernis et de ­charbons, ainsi que de poussière métallique et depuis peu de rouille en couches. Elle applique d’abord la rouille sur la toile et la laisse se fixer avant de travailler la toile dans son atelier à la peinture acrylique, l’encre ­de Chine et/ou le vernis. Il arrive que les différents ­matériaux produisent des réactions chimiques. Ces processus ne peuvent être contrôlés que partiellement et l’artiste exploite de manière parfaitement délibérée la dyna­mique propre du matériau avec beaucoup ­d’ouverture, car ce sont justement ces travaux pro­cessuels qui jouent un rôle essentiel à ses yeux. La composition de ses œuvres en couches constitue ­cependant moins une référence à des conditions ­extérieures que, bien plus, une analogie de procédés psychologiques existen­tiels, car les couches de couleurs sont superposées comme des souvenirs. « La lente accumulation quotidienne d’images, de pensées et de sentiments me fait percevoir mon travail comme réel, et non comme une abstraction », explique Sarti. Et comme dans la nature, dans le souvenir ou dans la vie, ses travaux allient beauté et rudesse. Giovanna Sarti ist eine ungegenständliche Malerin. ­Malerei ist für sie zunächst eine intensive Aus­einandersetzung mit den Möglichkeiten des Materials, neben ­Pigment, Tinte, Lack und Kohle nutzt sie Metallstaub, in jüngster Zeit arbeitet sie in Schichten mit Rost. Sie trägt ihn zunächst auf die Leinwand auf und lässt ihn dann fixieren, bevor sie die Leinwände im Atelier mit Acrylfarben, Tusche und/oder Lack bearbeitet. Dabei kommt es vor, dass die verschiedenen Malmittel ­chemisch miteinander reagieren. Solche Prozesse sind nur bedingt steuerbar, und so setzt die Künstlerin die ­Eigendynamik des Materials ganz bewusst ein, denn genau ein solches prozesshaftes Arbeiten spielt für sie eine wichtige Rolle. Der Aufbau der Arbeiten in Schichten ist allerdings weniger Referenz äußerer Bedingungen als vielmehr eine Analogie zu existenziellen psychischen Vorgängen, liegen die Farbschichten doch wie Erinnerungen übereinander. »Die langsametägliche Schichtung von Bildern, Gedanken und ­Gefühlen lässt mich meine Arbeit als real und nicht als Abstraktion begreifen«, sagt Giovanna Sarti. Und wie die Natur, die Erinnerung oder das Leben, verbinden die Arbeiten Giovanna Sartis Schönheit mit Rauheit. Selbst dann, wenn die Bilder vom Metallstaub glitzern oder gar Rosa ins Spiel kommt, halten sie, sobald der Rost wie in einem großen Tanz über das grobe Leinen tobt, die Spannung.Ausstellung:Kunstverein Heilbronn, 24/9–20/11/2016
