The book will present the new art spaces in Japan. These new constellations represent a paradigm shift from urban museums as containers to decentralised, remote installations. Fram Kitagawa, the author of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial Concept Book situates the creation of public art festivals and new small dedicated art museums. The translation of his essay will be supplemented by an essay by Lynne Breslin on the context of these new developments and several short essays on related topics. The Setouchi Triennial (islands in the Sea of Japan, including Naoshima, Teshima, Ushima), the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial, the Yokohama BankArt Movement, Tokyo Site, Chiyoda 3331 and the schools project will be discussed.
Fram Kitagawa is the director of the 2015 Echigo Tsumari Triennial. He has conceived of the Echigo Tsumari Art Fields project which opened in 2000. He is now the director of the Setouchi Art Triennial (Benesse Naoshima ) - the art islands in the inland sea.
