Violin Jazz on a Winter's Night
Oxford University Press
978-0-19-339344-8 (ISBN)
Violin Jazz on a Winter's Night is a Christmas album of stylish, swinging arrangements for violin and piano. Favourite Christmas carols and songs are given the complete jazz treatment, with rhythm, embellishment, grooves, and solos all carefully notated. The expertise of the arranger, a celebrated jazz musician and composer, guarantees an authentic jazz sound, and a range of styles from Nat King Cole to John Coltrane. While paying homage to American Christmas jazz, the collection also reflects a European tradition, in such time-honoured classics as 'In the bleak mid-winter'.
Multi-award-winning jazz pianist and composer, Nikki Iles, was a founder member of the innovative Creative Jazz Orchestra. She has a busy freelance career, with over 25 CDs recorded over three decades, and has been described as the Heroine of British Jazz. Composition remains a major part of her musical life with commissions from The London Sinfonietta, the International Society of Jazz Composers and Arrangers, and The National Youth Jazz Orchestra. With a parallel career as a much loved and respected teacher, Nikki is also Professor of Jazz Piano at the Royal Academy of Music and The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Her recent awards include the Ivors Academy Gold Badge for exceptional contribution to music (2019), the Jazz Education award, and the The Parliamentary Jazz Award (2019), as well as Jazz Ensemble of the Year for the Nikki Iles Big Band in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards (2020).
