Since the early 1950s, there has been a steady upsurge of archaeological activity all over the vast territories of China. An enormous amount of new material on Chinese art has accumulated, much of which has been described in numerous publications, but as these are practically all in Chinese, the West - handicapped by a language problem - has been unable to reap the full benefits of these new discoveries. Meanwhile, the history of Chinese art is constantly being revised in the light of new material being continuously unearthed by the archaeologist's spade. This volume features the collection in the Lee Kong Chian Art Museum of the National University of Singapore, which is presented in the context of its development in the four major areas of Chinese art: ceramics, bronze, archaic jade, and painting and calligraphy.
Chinese ceramics through the millennia; bronze - from cooking pot to symbol of regal power; jade - the quintessence of Heaven and Earth; appreciation of Chinese painting and calligraphy.
