Examines people who choose to try and ensconce themselves into a world where they do not belong. This work examines religion, friendship, aging, disappointment and failure in a very personal context. It uses the author's photography to illustrate the lies and deceit we all use in order to live in our complex society.
This book presents contemporary art photography. Victor Boullet has produced an unusual and fragile book of his most recent work. Unbound and presented in a plastic pack, this latest tome includes both photography and film stills. Entitled "Social Hypocrite", the narrative throughout the work examines people who choose to try and ensconce themselves into a world where they do not belong. They put on a front, in order to conceal a side of themselves they do not want to admit to. Take the series "Shadow Seeker" for example, here we see a solitary policeman repeatedly falling in the street. Normally speaking a policeman in uniform is a figure of authority and respect, but through showing his infallibility, his true weakness is revealed. Stills from the film "Iron" are juxtaposed with a printed version of the dialogue from the film. Through reading the text we get to see a little of the golfer's character - a self important, opinionated talker who, it emerges, is not as good a player as he would like to have you believe. The Story of Anton Henry da Silva combines photographs with text in the form of emails from Anton to the artist.
The character is dealing with the loss of his brother Edgar, who is represented by bones and ashes. The emails give us a glimpse into the mind of a man struggling to maintain his sanity behind closed doors, whilst putting on a brave face to the world outside. Another of Boullet's subjects dealing with the outside world is documented in "Screw the Ethics"? For this project Boullet has covertly and almost obsessively photographed a man with no nose. This man has walked, on a daily basis, past Boullet's studio. He wears no prosthesis and leaves his considerable deformity on view for any passer-by. Such voyeuristic photography often has a feeling of emotional detachment. However these images seem to tap into the shock one feels at seeing such a man. It is as though Boullet has felt wide - eyed before this disfigurement and with a brutal honesty, is compelled to document it. Other works included in "Social Hypocrite" examine religion, friendship, aging, disappointment and failure in a very personal context. Boullet cryptically uses his photography to illustrate the lies and deceit we all use in order to live in our complex society.
The fact that there are neither titles nor any explanatory text accompanying the imagery, forces the viewer to draw his own conclusions and make his own interpretation.
