An easy-reader chapter book about bravery, friendship, and empathy in the early years of the biblical David, that goes beyond his defeat of Goliath.
Young David felt stuck tending his family’s sheep every day—yes, the sheep were important, but they were also boring, stubborn, and had no sense of humor. David wanted excitement. When excitement appeared in the form of a mountain lion that carried away one of the lambs, David vowed to never let that happen again, and set about learning to fight, using a slingshot. But a slingshot is no easy weapon, and it took David a long time to learn to use it well enough to make a difference—but learn he did, setting himself on the road to saving the Israelites in the war against the Philistines, and eventually becoming king.

A note at the end explains archeological evidence about the actual reign of David, and an author’s note discusses the persistence and patience David needed to achieve his goals.

Tammar Stein is the author of books for children and young adults, including Beni’s War, winner of the Middle East Book Award and The Six-Day Hero, a Junior Library Guild Selection and Sydney Taylor Honor. She has a BA in English Literature form University of Virginia, and is a member of the Children's Book Guild of Washington DC. Tammar has lived on three continents, in five countries, and six states. She currently lives Singapore. Dodo Maeder is an artist and illustrator with heart and joy. When not drawing, she works as an animal keeper, makes music, and takes long walks with her dogs. She lives with her family in Turbenthal, Switzerland.
