This title incorporates an outline of the structure of government in Scotland after the Treaty of Union with an in-depth study of the politics and administration of Scotland from 1747 to 1784.
It concentrates on the role of the third Duke of Argyll as a Scottish 'manager' after the 1745 rebellion, arguing that in many ways he acted as a guardian of Scottish interests rather than a manager of Scottish politics for English politicians. The concluding chapters examine the reasons for the lack of a sucessor to Argyll until the emergence of Henry Dundas in 1784, and the political changes in Scotland which made the emergence of Dundas possible. The author has drawn upon a wide range of original sources, which are documented in the extensive bibliography. Appendices also detail the government offices in Scotland and the Scottish civil list. This book will appeal not only to scholars and specialists, but to anyone with an interest in Scottish political history.
