In 1902, Sir Apolo Kagwa, the Chief Minister and Principle Regent of the Kingdom of Buganda, and his secretary, Ham Mukasa, arrived in Britain for the coronation of King Edward VII. This book, first published in 1904, is the record of the journey made by these two men into the heart of empire. It provides a view not only of the nature of the colonial relationship as it appeared to colonized subjects, but it also raises questions about the role of indigenous elites in the making of colonial culture. It questions the function of the travel narrative in the constitution of the relationship between the metropolitan centre and the colonial margin.
