In Book 3 students meet the greatest of Latin authors: eyewitnesses, historians and poets. Cicero and Caesar document the Civil War through letters and histories. The emperors are brought to life by their biographers and correspondents Suetonius, Tacitus and Pliny; and the daily lives and loves of ancient Rome are captured in the poetry of Catullus, Tibullus, Martial and Horace.

Chapter 13 - Eye-witness writers (with a focus on Pompey, Caesar, Cicero and the civil war). Latin texts for this section are taken from Cicero’s letters and Caesar’s Bellum Civile
Chapter 14 - Epic poetry. Latin texts for this section are taken from Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
Chapter 15 - Writers under the emperors. Latin texts for this section are taken from Tacitus’ Annals, Suetonius’ Lives of the Twelve Caesars and Pliny’s letters.
Chapter 16 - Shorter Latin poetry. Latin texts for this section are taken from Catullus, Horace, Tibullus and Martial.
