A catalogue of a Late Bronze Age necropolis in Southern Uzbekistan, containing 719 burials from the 20th-16th c. BC of the Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex – Central Asia’s largest scientifically studied prehistoric necropolis after Gonur. The catalogue includes burial descriptions and inventories, with ceramic drawings and photographs.
Džarkutan Nekropole 4A presents a catalogue of the Late Bronze Age necropolis of Džarkutan 4a in Southern Uzbekistan. Excavated in the 1970s, the graveyard contained 719 burials of the 20th-16th c. BC, of the so-called Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex (BMAC). Apart from the site of Gonur, this is the largest scientifically studied prehistoric necropolis of Central Asia. While some material has been discussed in earlier publications, the individual descriptions of the burials and a large part of the inventories are published here for the first time. For some 350 graves, ceramic drawings or photographs were pulled together from archives, museum collections and the excavators' personal records. About 40% of the material originally excavated - and some 60% of the complete vessels excavated - could be assembled. The catalogue is preceded by a short introduction into the culture, history, and research history of the Late Bronze Age of Central Asia, and followed by a discussion of the burial customs.

Boriboi Abdullaev† investigated the site of Džarkutan as a member of the Samarkand Institute of Archaeology's Surkhandarya expedition under the direction of Ahmadali Askarov. He defended his Ph.D. on the excavations of Necropolis 4a in 1980 (published in 1983 in Russian). He left the field for a secondary education teaching position and is now deceased. Kai Kaniuth has worked on the Sapalli Culture, the Uzbek variant of the BMAC, since 1995. He completed his Ph.D. in 2000 with a thesis on the Late Bronze Age metalwork of Central Asia. He is now a senior lecturer at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, Germany. Mike Teufer completed his Ph.D. in 2006 with a dissertation on Late Bronze Age grave assemblages from Northern Bactria and neighbouring regions. He currently works as a scientific researcher in the Eurasia Department of the German Archaeological Institute.
