This volume demonstrates the wide array of topics in ancient warfare currently studied by researchers around the world. Arranged chronologically in Greek and Roman history sections, the book takes readers through all manner of current research topics on ancient warfare, from traditional battle narratives or strategic analyses of campaigns, through the logistical considerations of armies in the field, to the ideology of women in war and mythology. The study of ancient war deals with a myriad of different topics and deals with themes in all types of history: social, cultural, economic, religious, literary, numismatical, epigraphical, ethnographical, topographical, prosopographical, and mythical, as well as the usual political and military. The study of ancient war is a field that is growing in popularity and continues to surprise us with many innovative new ideas, as shown in this collection of papers by established academics and current graduate students.

Jared Kreiner is Lecturer of History and Classics at Christopher Newport University, in Newport News, Virginia. His current research focuses on how Roman administrative institutions impacted the occurrence of provincial revolts, how studying provincial revolts may provide novel insights on imperial-level policies and army recruitment, and surveys on issues surrounding veteran settlement in the Roman Empire. Graham Wrightson is Associate Professor of History at South Dakota State University, USA. His research focuses primarily on Macedonian military history with a special focus on military manuals, combined arms and the sarissa phalanx. He has published over twenty articles and papers on Macedonian warfare, edited multiple conference proceeding edited volumes, and three monographs. He organizes the annual Warfare in the Ancient World International Conference (WAWIC) hybrid every June and the annual interdisciplinary Many Faces of War online conference every March. He is the founding president of the Midwest Ancient Warfare Network and the Upper Midwest Ancient History Network, both based in the USA.
