As the "Orange Revolution" has shown, modern-day Ukraine has undeniably come a long way since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. This volume contains papers delivered at conferences about Ukraine held at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) in 2001 and 2002. Supplementary articles have been solicited from recognized experts in the field to provide a comprehensive picture of a country in transition and to explain some of the challenges of Ukraine's "New Deal".

The Editors: Nicolas Hayoz is associate professor of political science and the director of the Interdisciplinary Institute of Central and Eastern Europe at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland). He has published articles on politics and state reform in the former Soviet Union and Russia. His research interests include state reform, good governance, legal and judicial reforms in Eastern and Central Europe.
Andrej N. Lushnycky is the director of the American College Program at the University of Fribourg and a senior associate of the Interdisciplinary Institute of Central and Eastern Europe at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland). His research interests include contemporary Ukrainian history, culture and Diaspora studies. He is also the president of the Ukrainian Society of Switzerland.
