The first full collection of the fragments of Greek works on ‘Antiquities’ with translation and full commentary. It offers many fresh interpretations and makes this difficult material accessible to non-specialists.
This volume is part of the continuation of Felix Jacoby’s monumental collection of fragmentary Greek historiography. It contains new editions of the works On cities, On islands, Foundations, Names of peoples, Changes of names and Aitia. These works deal mainly with the early, often mythical, history of Greek cities and regions but also touch upon their later history. For the first time, all the texts have been provided with a translation and a comprehensive commentary, which contains many innovative interpretations. It also makes these difficult texts accessible to a non-specialist readership.

Stefan Schorn, Dr. phil., is Professor of Ancient History at KU Leuven. He has published on ancient biography, historiography, and political theory and he is editor-in-chief of Die Fragmente der Griechischen Historiker Continued. Part IV: Biography and Antiquarian Literature. David Engels, Dr. phil., was Professor of Roman History at the UL Brussels and is now chief analyst at the Instytut Zachodni, Poznań. He has published on Roman religion, Hellenistic history and comparative cultural studies.
