This is the story of Britain's islands and the impress they have made on its culture, history and collective psyche. From Neolithic Orkney and druidical Anglesey to the joys and strangeness of modern Thanet, we explore the furthest reaches of Britain's island topography, once known by the collective term, Britanniae (the Britains). Alice Albinia is an award-winning author of fiction and non-fiction. Her books include Empires of the Indus: The Story of a River and Cwen, set on an archipelago which comes under female rule, which was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction. Albinia has worked as an editor and journalist, writing for publications including the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times and National Geographic. She has taught writing in Orkney for the Islands' Council, at King's College London and the University of Kent.
