The essays in Hamlet: The State of Play explore the play from a variety of different angles, drawing on contemporary approaches to gender, sexuality, race, the history of emotions, memory, visual and material cultures, performativity, theories and histories of place, and textual studies. They offer fresh approaches to literary and cultural analysis, offer accessible introductions to some current ways of exploring the relationship between the three early texts, and present analysis of some important recent responses to Hamlet on screen and stage, together with a set of approaches to the study of adaptation.
Sonia Massai is Professor of Shakespeare Studies in the English Department at King's College London, UK. She is the author of Shakespeare and the Rise of the Editor (2007), and the editor of collection of essays, including Ivo van Hove: from Shakespeare to David Bowie (2018), and of plays, including John Ford’s ’Tis Pity She’s a Whore (2011). Lucy Munro is Professor of Shakespeare and Early Modern Literature at King’s College London, UK. She is the author of Children of the Queen’s Revels: A Jacobean Theatre Repertory (2005) and Archaic Style in English Literature, 1590-1674 (2013), and the editor of plays including Fletcher’s The Tamer Tamed and Dekker, Ford and Rowley’s The Witch of Edmonton.
