This is a major study of modern Irish literature by the distinguished scholar Vivian Mercier (1919-1989). Through highly readable analyses of such major figures as Yeats, Synge, Shaw, Joyce, and Beckett, Mercier shows how these writers made use of a Gaelic literary heritage to create a confident new tradition which has become the basis of modern Irish writing in English.
