The book inquires into the beginnings of the doctrine in the thirteenth century and explains the relation of the transcendental way of thought to Aquinas's conception of metaphysics. It analyzes "Being," "One," "True," "Good" and "Beautiful" individually and discusses their importance for the philosophical knowledge of God.

Jan A. Aertsen, Ph.D. (1982) in Philosophy, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Cologne and Director of the Thomas-Institute. He has published extensively on Thomas Aquinas and the doctrine of the transcendentals including Nature and Creature, Thomas Aquinas's Way of Thought (Brill, 1988).
