The basic terms and concepts needed to understand Roman politics and religion are provided in the first two chapters, and each subsequent chapter introduces students to a different aspect of Roman society and culture, such as food and dining, the military, money, the Latin language, and roads and aqueducts.

Joseph McAlhany holds a Ph.D. in Classics from Columbia University and a B.A. in philosophy from Haverford College. He is an assistant professor in the Department of History at the University of Connecticut.
