Although Cyprus is a relatively small island, its position in the East Mediterranean has always given it strategic importance beyond its size. Well placed for travel from all over the globe with plenty of sunshine throughout the year - and a strong tradition in European culture, through British and Greek influence, Cyprus has become a favoured tourist destination. All visitors, whether to the Greek or Turkish side of the island, discover that Cyprus has an immensely rich history with many different civilisations and nations influencing the ruling the island.
Timothy Boatswain is Pro-Vice Chancellor at the University of Luton. His degrees are in archaeology and anthropology. He is a committee member of the Association for Cypriot Greek and Turkish Affairs, which is an academic society dedicated to bringing the two communities together. He regularly gives lectures on the island both in the UK and Cyprus. He is co-author of 'A Traveller'sHistory of Greece' and is about to publish 'The Political Culture of Cyprus'
