The city of Venice is now seen as a prime tourist destination, but behind its lovely facade lies a historical story which this title will uncover for the visitor.
This book will present a short, readable overview of the history of Venice from the fifth century AD to the present. The main theme will be the unique place Venice occupied in the history of Europe in general and Italy in particular. While Venice has been politically part of united Italy since 1866, its development tied it as much to the Eastern Mediterranean and the Levant as to the Italian peninsula. It is this rich cultural mix which has made Venice such a fascinating, even magical place. There will be special reference features in the book to the main churches, galleries, islands - to everything that the tourist would seek out.

Dr Mentzel is currently Assistant Professor of European and Near Eastern History at Utah State University. He has travelled extensively through the length and breadth of the former Venetian Empire in the Adriatic and Eastern Mediterranean. His research interests have focused on the social and economic history of that area and he has contributed many papers to academic journals.
