A thought-provoking essay that challenges polarising perceptions and celebrates universal connections.
"Where are you from?" I'm asked.
"The UK," I reply.
"I mean where are you originally from?"
"Zambia," I reply.

These questions are very familiar to those from visible ethnic groups in the UK who have had to answer these questions many times in their lives. It may seem like a simple question, but behind it lay assumptions and an ignorance that are far, far more complicated.

As a black woman born and living in the UK - a melting pot of different cultures - I find this question a loaded one, one that seeks to put me in a box: where am I in relation to you? A judgement based on the colour of my skin, when my very identity is made up of so many things.

I am not a single narrative, I am not a stereotype and until we share a diversity of stories, dangerous assumptions will persist. So, you want to know where I'm really from? Here is my story; may it impact yours.

In this thought-provoking essay, CEO of Christian Aid, Amanda Mukwashi, challenges polarising perceptions and celebrates universal connections of identity, humanhood and hope.

Amanda Mukwashi is the CEO of Christian Aid UK. Born in the UK and of Zambian heritage, Amanda is a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Prior to joining Christian Aid, she worked as the Chief of Volunteer Knowledge and Innovation for the United Nations Volunteer Programme (UNDP), based in Germany. Before that, she was the Director of Policy for VSO International, based in London, where she was responsible for programme policy and programme effectiveness across the whole federation and VSO global. She has also served as Head of External Relations and Head of Programmes at Skillshare International UK, as well as Women in Business Coordinator at the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa in Lusaka, where she began her career in international development. Amanda has a Master's degree in International Economic Law, from the University of Warwick, and a Bachelor of Laws degree, from the University of Zambia. Amanda has served as a trustee on the board of Bond and as President of Akina Mama wa Afrika. She became a trustee of Christian Aid in 2015 and stood down from the Board to apply for the Chief Executive position. She started as Chief Executive in April 2018. She is married and has two children.
