Die Hansestadt Lübeck zählt seit 1987 zum Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO und den archäologisch bestuntersuchten Zentren Nordeuropas. Alleinstellungsmerkmale sind die hervorragende Erhaltung und der enorme quantitative und qualitative Fundreichtum mit vielen Millionen Objekten. Nahezu jede Facette mittelalterlich-frühneuzeitlichen Lebens einer Metropole der Hansezeit kann durch Lübecker Funde dargestellt werden, die bislang jedoch in Magazinen schlummern und nur gelegentlich einzeln bei auswärtigen Ausstellungen zu bestaunen sind. Diese reich bebilderte Zusammenstellung bietet einen kleinen Einblick in diese Fülle, die von unsichtbaren Spuren in Erdproben über Bernsteinperlen bis zu ganzen Holzkonstruktionen der Bebauung des 12. Jh. reicht. Von den ersten Menschenspuren der frühen Steinzeit bis in die jüngste Vergangenheit spannt sich der Bogen einer reichen Kulturlandschaft mit der frühen Großstadt Lübeck im Zentrum. Befunde und Funde wie Keramik, Holzgeschirr, Fässer, Münzen, Gläser, Spielzeug, Schuhe oder Schmuck erlauben einen Blick auf vergangene Zeiten und Akteure, aber auch Einsichten in den weitgespannten Handelsraum und Einflussraum Lübecks.
The Hanseatic City of Lübeck has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987 and is one of the best excavated centres in Northern Europe. Its most unique features are the excellent preservation and enormous quantitative and qualitative wealth of finds with many millions of objects. Almost every aspect of Medieval to Early Modern life in a metropolis of the Hanse Period can be illustrated by finds from Lübeck which, however, still lay hidden in archives and can only occasionally be admired individually in external exhibitions. This richly illustrated compilation offers a short glance of this abundance which reaches from invisible traces in soil samples via amber beads to entire timber constructions of 12th-century A.D. buildings. The wide arc of this rich cultural landscape with the early major city of Lübeck in the centre spans from first human traces of the early Stone Age until most recent periods. Features and finds such as pottery, wooden dishes, barrels, coins, glass containers, toys, shoes or jewellery provide insights into past times and protagonists, but also into the widespread sphere of trade and influence of Lübeck.
