A study of workers, organized labour and society in Britain and America from the 18th century to the 20th. The second of a set of two, this study deals with the uneven development of corporate capitalism and responses of employers and the state to workers' organizations, particularly trade unions.
Starting with a study of the economic crises of the late nineteenth century, this volume moves on to consider the uneven development of corporate capitalism and the responses of employers and the state to workers' organisations, particularly trade unions. The focus then moves to politics, ideology and culture, and the contrasting fortunes of independent labour politics in the two countries. An overview of key developments during the inter-war years is followed by some concluding reflections on the 'class and exceptionalism' debate.
