The fabled empire of the Incas is still a prime destination for adventurous travellers. This history gives a complete overview of the ancient and modern history of Peru. Includes Historical Gazetteer, Chronology of Major events, List of Rulers, Monarchs, Heads of State.
A Traveller's History of Peru will give the curious tourist not only a contemporary portrait of the country as it is in the 21st century, its political systems and economic problems, but also looks at the early history of the indigenous peoples 30,000 years before the Europeans came. The glories of these ancient civilisations and the remains from the Inca's empire are still highlights on the tourist trail. The book also offers the story of the extraordinary conquest by Pizarro and the subsequent colonisation by the Spanish and French. The days of independence in the nineteenth century finally laid the territorial limits of the modern state which over the years has been sustained by its major export - guano. The last two hundred years has seen Peru bedevilled by foreign domination of its economy, widespread poverty and revolts with the emergence in the early 1980s of the Maoist guerilla movement in the Andes - the Shining Path. Finally it looks at what the future holds for Peru and its people. It will also have practical information for visitors, a historical gazetteer and be illustrated with relevant maps plus a Chronology of Events.
