Author Francis D. Cogliano pays particular attention to the experiences of those who were excluded from the immediate benefits and rights secured by the creation of the republic, including women, Native Americans, and African Americans.

This third edition has been fully revised and updated to incorporate the insights of the latest scholarship throughout, including additional discussion of regional differences and the role of religion. Francis D. Cogliano is Professor of American History at the University of Edinburgh, where he specializes in the history of revolutionary and early national America. He is the author of Empire of Liberty: Thomas Jefferson's Foreign Policy (2014).
