Since the death in 1998 of his wife, the novelist and philosopher Iris Murdoch, from Alzheimer's disease, John Bayley has given much thought to adjusting to his new, single status. This book provides a meditation on his bereavement and loss.
Since the death in 1998 of his wife, the novelist and philosopher Iris Murdoch, John Bayley has given much thought to adjusting to his new, single status. As the carer of a victim of Alzheiner's, his was in many ways a double-bereavement as Iris, in the sense of the person who John Bayley met and married, very slowly departed this world some years before her physical death. This book provides a meditation on his bereavement and loss written in John Bayley's sensitive and amusing style of reminiscence.

John Bayley was Wharton Professor of English at the University of Oxford and is a fellow of St Catherine's College. He is a well-known literary critic and as well as Iris: A Memoir, he is the author of Alice, The Queer Captain, George's Lair and The Red Hat, all novels published by Duckworth. He recently re-married and lives in Oxford.
