Imagine the shock felt by Jesus’ disciples. They had witnessed the unprecedented drama of the Incarnation of God in the person of Jesus, his remarkable miracles, his brutal death and then—beyond all belief—his stunning resurrection from the dead. Their leader and Messiah was alive again and would lead them to redeem his people. But then, as suddenly as he had appeared, Jesus just left. It was over. Or was it
Before Jesus left he entrusted his disciples—and us—with a critical mission: to launch a spiritual and social revolution that would turn the world upside down. We were to go to the far corners of the earth to proclaim the gospel and demonstrate the love of God to a hurting and hostile world. Jesus called this mission "‘the advance of the kingdom of God", and when the job was done, He promised to return.
But two thousand years later the mission remains unfinished. This book is an invitation to discover the life that God created you to live. It’s not about failure and guilt but more about opportunities and joy, because God doesn’t coerce us—he invites us. He offers meaning, fulfillment, and significance in our lives but always gives us the option to decline, and sadly, many do.
It is time to rediscover our calling. It is time to relaunch.
Richard Stearns went from success to significance when he left the corporate world behind to become president of World Vision U.S. in 1998. After 20 years as the longest-serving CEO of the Christian relief and development organisation, he plans to retire in January 2019. Stearns holds a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. His professional career included leadership roles at Gillette, Parker Brothers Games, The Franklin Mint, and Lenox Inc., where he became president and chief executive officer in 1995. Stearns brought corporate best practices to World Vision, where he inspired a culture of outcome-focused management. His lasting legacy is his leadership in calling on the Church in America to respond to some of the greatest needs of our time, notably the HIV and AIDS pandemic and the global refugee crisis. Stearns and his wife, Renee, have five children and five grandchildren and live in Bellevue, Washington.
