An anthology of both original and reprinted articles on sexuality from a sociological perspective. The readings in this collection focus on the diverse and multi-layered meanings of sexuality, sexual behaviors and sexual identities, while essays explore sexuality as a social process.
Offering an anthology of original articles on sexuality from a sociological perspective, this book focuses on the diverse and multi-layered meanings of sexuality, sexual behaviors, and sexual identities. The essays explore sexuality as a social process. As a whole, the book takes the perspective that what each of us understands to be sexual is constructed through everyday social processes and interaction, situated in particular spaces and moments, identified through our social-sexual presentations, and symbolized through language, objects and practices. The book is organized around these four distinct but interrelated processes, and augmented by personal narratives around relevant issues. The authors’ goals for the book are to engage students in the sociological enterprise by providing interesting and insightful entries that emphasize the importance of meaning-making in human sexuality, and to provide them with conceptual tools to understand human sexuality in a complex and quickly changing sexual landscape.

Dr. Weinberg is the author or editor of four books (two monographs and two edited volumes). He is Associate Editor of Ethnographic Studies and Sexuality & Culture and a referee for the Journal of Sexual Medicine.  He is a contributor to The Routledge Handbook of Deviant Behavior, edited by the late Clifton Bryant (2012). Dr. Weinberg is currently working with data gathered from a sample of sadomasochists, who were interviewed about their coming-out experiences. Dr. Newmahr is an ethnographer and the author of Playing on the Edge: Sadomasochism, Risk and Intimacy (Indiana University Press, 2011), an ethnography of an SM community that theorizes risk-taking and emotion from an interactionist perspective. She is Associate Editor of Symbolic Interaction (Wiley-Blackwell). She has published several papers in sociology and interdisciplinary journals. Most recently, she completed an invited chapter for the anthology Life as Performance: A Dramaturgical Handbook (Ashgate, expected 2012) and an article on the eroticism of Renaissance Faire.  She is also a contributor to The Routledge Handbook of Deviant Behavior (2012).  She is currently working on her second monograph.
