This work looks at three questions: how have museums traditionally dealt with issues of sexuality? Why has sexuality been traditionally excluded from most museums? And is sexuality an appropriate topic for consideration by museums and, if so, how might they begin to get to grips with the subject?
The theme of sexuality is one which pervades contemporary culture. Yet museums have almost ubiquitously ignored sexuality as a legitimate topic, creating a gap in their representation of the breadth of human experience which is increasingly being exploited - for considerable commercial gain - by the sex industry. This book investigates three questions: how have museums traditionally dealt with issues of sexuality? Why has sexuality been traditionally excluded from most museums? Is sexuality an appropriate topic for consideration by museums and, if so, how might they begin to get to grips with the subject? It them looks specifically at making histories of parenthood, love and romance, homosexuality, prostitution, erotica and pornography.
