The diaries of Henry Selden Young, a young Englishman who embarked on a world trip because of ailing health. An historic document which provides insights about Young's values, and his attitudes to indigenous people, which have importance for our own understanding of social attitudes.
Henry Selden Young was a bookseller from Liverpool who went on a world trip for his health. He was in his early twenties at the time. He tells a story of the sea voyage with its discomforts. He visits Tasmania, New South Wales and Victoria, and then travels to New Zealand. He did the trip from Auckland to the Pink and White Terraces of Tarawera/Rotomahana almost exactly a year before they were destroyed. He sailed down the New Zealand coast and left to return to England from Lyttleton. As well as being historically important it provides fascinating insights about his values, and his attitudes to indigenous people which have importance for our own understanding of social attitudes.
