Written specificially for nursing students and nurses and linked to the new NMC standards, this book combines psychological and social issues relevant to nursing at an introductory level.
This book explores the sociology and psychology relevant to nursing and explains why it is so important to understand these subjects in order to be a good nurse. It has been written specifically for nursing students, and explains clearly the key concepts in both disciplines that they need to grasp. Chapters move from the individual to wider societal issues and look at the psychological and sociological basis of professional values, interpersonal relationships, nursing practice, decision making, leadership and management and teamworking. Each of the fields of nursing are explored to show the specific application of these disciplines to each.

Benny Goodman is now an independent scholar having retired from his position as lecturer in Adult Nursing in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Plymouth University. He qualified as a Registered General Nurse in the 1980′s following graduation with a BSc Sociology and Politics. He writes on topics such as sustainability, climate change and health but always within a socio-political framework. He is author and co-author of two other Learning Matters books: Collaborative Practice and Sociology and Psychology in Nursing. Current interests include the socio-political role of the nurse. Tim Ley has been teaching psychology as applied to health care to various health professions since 1990, initially at St Loyes School of Occupational Therapy and subsequently at Plymouth University. This work has provided him with many opportunities to collect the experiences of both those who receive health care and those who provide it. The aim of his teaching is to show how the ideas of academic psychology can be applied to help health care workers understand more fully the experiences of those that they care for.
